What is Zolpidem?

Zolpidem is the active ingredient in the first approved “non-benzodiazepine” sleep medication.

• History: Originally introduced in France in 1988 by Synthalabo, it was approved by the FDA in 1992 under the brand name Ambien. Since its patent expired in 2007, it has been widely available in generic versions.

• How it Works: As a GABA receptor agonist, it increases the effects of GABA (a calming chemical) in the central nervous system.

   

• The Advantage: Unlike older sedatives, Zolpidem specifically targets sleep neurotransmitters. Because it lacks significant muscle-relaxant or anticonvulsant effects, it is often preferred for treating insomnia and is generally considered less habit-forming than benzodiazepines.

• Maintenance Insomnia: Difficulty staying asleep. This often creates a “vicious cycle” where the user worries about their lack of sleep, making it even harder to rest.

   

Dosage Recommendations

• Standard Dose: No more than 10 mg per 24-hour period, taken as a single dose.
